40 New Pipeline Projects planned for 2013 and 2014

40 New Pipeline Projects planned for 2013 and 2014

Some of the companies included in the 40 new projects are Occidental Petroleum Corporati, Chevron Corp, Andarko Petroleum, Marathon Oil Corp and of course many others.

We have 20 major pipeline projects being developed and starting in 2013 alone for about 4 million barrels a day of oil transport into Houston by 2015, which we think is the biggest single oil pipeline infrastructure addition ever seen in the world. …We have same thing happening in 2014, another 20 pipelines for a similar amount for additional oil transport.”

Pipeline Components

Pipeline Components

“The speed at which pipelines are built is one of the more serious constraints in preventing impacts. Most big infrastructures take many years to plan and build. Completion of pipelines, on the other hand, often takes 24 to 36 months. This means it is even more important for the ESA of pipelines to begin as soon as the prefeasibility planning begins. Route selection, the main means of reducing impacts, is often one of the first items planned by the engineers. “

Being how I am blogging for a Valve Manufacture, I will save you some extra details about what a pipeline consists of. Depending on if you are an end-user, Mfg, or just a reader hoping to gain more info, you probably already know the different parts.  Typically, you might see pipes, flanges, valves, fasteners, and of course many more parts. Some of the ball valves you might see would be the Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves. (This is our specialty)

GVC’s Trunnion Ball Valve are manufactured accordance to API 6D, NACE Compliant, they consist of 2 piece and 3 piece designs, also are Double Block & Bleed. We have a variety we keep in stock from ANSI 150-2500. If you are interested in GVC’s Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves, and want to know more information please visit our direct website which will route you to our Trunnion Valves: (For more information on our Trunnion Ball Valves, please visit our site; http://http://gvcintl.com/products_trunnion_mounted_ball_valves.html

The Chocolate Industry Today

The Chocolate Industry Today

We’ve heard of pipelines used for oil to be transported, but what about chocolate?  “Nowadays it is almost impossible to think about a chocolate industry without pigging technology. Not only chocolate masses and fillings can be transported through pipelines but also problematic products such as cocoa, nuts or crunches.”

How is chocolate transported? “Chocolate is transported through the pipeline with a temperature of 45-50°C. When the product has a lower temperature than that, there is no possibility to pump and / or store the chocolate.” There is no need to stop the flow of chocolate, except on the weekends, when most of the factories are closed. “The standing still of chocolate in a pipeline however may cause sediments to build in the pipe. The fructose in diet chocolate can crystallize and thus spoil the whole batch”

Pigging is also a very important factor in the chocolate pipelines. It means that the contents of a pipe is pushed out with a contoured plug aka the pig. This method is used all over the food industry. These types of plants are fully automated which means they are controlled by machines to optimize productivity in the production of goods and delivery of services.

Explosion Shuts down Oil Pipeline in Turkey

On Friday, in Ankara, Turkey, an explosion and fire caused a pipeline which carried oil from Iraq to World Markets to be shut down. The explosion hit a section of a pipeline in between the northern Iraqi City of Kirkuk and Turkey’s Mediterranean Port of Ceyhan.

The pipeline has two lines running parallel to each other, which carried about 25 million tons of crude oil a year. Although the second line was not damaged officials stated “We still need to briefly shut the lines down for precaution.”

By Saturday afternoon, firefighters put out the blazing fire which lasted 3 ½ hours. The repairs to the pipeline will begin shortly, although they were not clear when oil flows to Ceyhan would resume due to the damage.

Official’s stated “Condition of anonymity, the cause of the blast was most likely the result of sabotage. Kurdish rebels, fighting for autonomy in Turkey’s Kurdish-dominated southeast, have bombed the pipeline before, cutting oil flows from Iraq for days.

Officials wait for any ongoing procedures for fixing the pipeline and are looking more in depth with other lines out in the Middle East, for any other damages the Kurds might have done.

Marcellus Shale giving boost to US Midstream Firms

Anticipated growth in Marcellus shale natural gas production likely will mean more long-term business for US midstream companies, Fitch Ratings said in a recent report in which analysts forecast Marcellus production during the next 5 years will grow to more than 10 bcfd from the current 4 bcfd.

Expanding Marcellus production will require midstream companies to expand gathering and processing services and provide pipelines to transport gas and associated natural gas liquids.”

“Marcellus production has begun displacing supplies that traditionally served eastern US markets and more gas is expected to be produced than the region can consume.

As Marcellus production ramps up, pipeline expansions and flow reversals will enable that gas to reach Canada, New England, the Atlantic states, the Gulf of Mexico region, the Midcontinent, and the Midwest.”

Fixing the oil industry, one beer at a time

“The importance of the pipeline in industry, agriculture and nearly every vital facet of civilization cannot be under-emphasized. Without pipeline construction, we would lack plumbing and electricity, not to mention access to gas & petroleum reserves.”

“A massive undertaking of over 5 km in length, the Veltins Arena beer pipeline was constructed to ensure that it would never “run dry”.

What a great idea! If we could use the abandoned pipeline to make them into beer pipelines- nothing would go to waste! We wouldn't have any decommissioned pipelines lying around either.

Forest fires and the affect on Pipelines

A forest fire had started on June 23, in the Pike National Forest. The fire exploded eastward toward the city, destroying 346 homes and killing two people.

“According to fire officials, they expect to have the Waldo Canyon Fire fully contained on July 16. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The cost of the fire is estimated at $8.8 million.”

I believe the weather has a major impact on these fires in Colorado- lately we have seen the temperature rise up from 95 to 105! If the fires come across any pipelines this could be bad news. Thankfully- there are not any pipelines in the area where the fires are currently at in Colorado. If a pipeline is damaged, natural gas could escape causing fires, explosions, or asphyxiation.

Enbridge new Pipeline expansion project

Not, all the pipeline projects are dead yet! I am hoping with the new election coming up, there will be new projects and new pipelines to build.

Enbridge has secured commercial support to proceed with several projects designed to increase capacity on the Enbridge crude oil mainline system in Canada and the U.S. and to increase capacity on pipelines that serve eastern U.S. and Canadian refineries.”

“Elsewhere the installation of a new 35-mile, 20-inch pipeline twinning the existing Enbridge Line 17 (Toledo pipeline) will add 80,000 bpd of capacity to the Enbridge mainline system. The line is expected to be available for service in early 2013 at a cost of approximately $0.2 billion.”

Pipelines in Poland

“Exxon Mobil Corp. said Monday it has dropped further shale exploration in Poland after two wells failed to yield commercial quantities of natural gas, a hit for the country’s efforts to reduce its dependence on imports from Russia”

We know that Obama has cancelled the Keystone Pipeline- why not take all our resources and send some workers to the Eastern European countries to build a pipeline? This will not only help out our neighbors but also create jobs for thousands of people.

“Analysts have said that Poland and other Eastern European countries faced a big challenge for developing unconventional energy resources, owing to a lack of infrastructure and manpower. Unlike the U.S. and Canada, Poland doesn’t have a well-developed pipeline system to move gas from the fields it is produced to where it is consumed, nor the strong drilling services industry needed to tap shale reservoirs.”

Just how significant has the Marcellus shale been in increasing the production of natural gas in the Northeast? That’s the question that the Midstream Monitor decided to answer in our first Spotlight feature.
Using data supplied by Hart Energy’s Mapping & GIS division, Midstream Monitor found that production out of the Marcellus region rose from 62.25 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) on January 1, 2008 just before the region became hot to 3.19 Bcf/d on December 31, 2010 after production had taken off in the region.
While there have been dips in these production figures during this two-year period, by and large production has gone from strength-to-strength with production peaking on December 24, 2010 at 3.24 Bcf/d.
It is important to note that these figures do not represent the Marcellus shale alone, only receipt figures from gathering systems in the region. These pipe flows do not necessarily represent actual wellhead production.
“Production out of the Marcellus shale is currently approximately 1.3 Bcf/d and should exit the year by jumping over the 2 Bcf/d hurdle,” Opoku Danquah, director of upstream research for Hart Energy, said.
While gas prices remain weak, the Marcellus shale represents a premium market for producers due to its proximity to lucrative markets in the Northeast. However, this location also presents a problem for producers – namely being able to get these volumes to market.
This has turned out to be a boon for midstream operators, who are in the midst of building up the region with much needed infrastructure. The biggest projects attached to the Marcellus from a midstream perspective are, of course, pipelines with companies such as Williams, Spectra, El Paso, Kinder Morgan and EQT building new pipelines, as well as laterals to existing pipelines.
However, there are also strong opportunities for natural gas processing plants since the states that make up the play are among the lowest in terms of processing capacity. Because of this processing shortage in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, we’ve already seen several plants in each state brought online or announced so far this year.
In January, Caiman Energy brought the 120 MMcf/d Ft. Beeler cryogenic plant online in Cameron, West Virginia and that same month MarkWest Liberty Midstream & Resources announced it will build its third natural gas processing plant in the play when it constructs a 120 MMcf/d cryogenic plant in Logansport, W. Va., by mid-2012. This will be MarkWest Liberty’s third plant in the play. – Frank Nieto
