Bakken Crude Express
Bakken Crude Express
Bakken Crude Express Pipeline would have been an approximately 2,092 km, crude-oil pipeline with the capacity to transport 200,000 bbl/d of light-sweet crude oil from multiple points in the Williston Basin in the Bakken Shale in North Dakota and Montana to the crude-oil market hub in Cushing, Oklahoma.
ONEOK Partners, LP, says that it did not receive sufficient long-term transportation commitments during its recently concluded open season for the Bakken Crude Express Pipeline. As a result, the partnership has elected not to proceed with plans to construct the pipeline.

Pipeline Components
Pipeline Components
“The speed at which pipelines are built is one of the more serious constraints in preventing impacts. Most big infrastructures take many years to plan and build. Completion of pipelines, on the other hand, often takes 24 to 36 months. This means it is even more important for the ESA of pipelines to begin as soon as the prefeasibility planning begins. Route selection, the main means of reducing impacts, is often one of the first items planned by the engineers. “
Being how I am blogging for a Valve Manufacture, I will save you some extra details about what a pipeline consists of. Depending on if you are an end-user, Mfg, or just a reader hoping to gain more info, you probably already know the different parts. Typically, you might see pipes, flanges, valves, fasteners, and of course many more parts. Some of the ball valves you might see would be the Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves. (This is our specialty)
GVC’s Trunnion Ball Valve are manufactured accordance to API 6D, NACE Compliant, they consist of 2 piece and 3 piece designs, also are Double Block & Bleed. We have a variety we keep in stock from ANSI 150-2500. If you are interested in GVC’s Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves, and want to know more information please visit our direct website which will route you to our Trunnion Valves: (For more information on our Trunnion Ball Valves, please visit our site; http://http://gvcintl.com/products_trunnion_mounted_ball_valves.html

Those Dam Valves
As the nation increasingly seeks sources for renewable energy, dams and the thousands of valves they contain will only become more important.
When we see a majestic dam, with its huge face of concrete holding back acres of water, probably the last thing we think of are the valves it takes to make them operate effectively
“The purpose of the valves in these structures is to adjust the output of the reservoir that forms behind those dams while maintaining the proper reservoir depth, both in times of flood and in drought. Looking at the top of a moderate-size dam, we would see a number of rolling gates or sluices that provide the modulation of flow necessary to balance water supply and demand. In fact, the most common style of gate or valve used is a rolling type, which functions very similar to a sluice gate valve that is open at the top. Although this is technically a valve, these gates are not at all like the valve designs used in other industries.”
Valves- Flanges
When you see the word Flange- what do you think of? There are many different types of flanges. Some of the major flange types are: Welding Neck Flange, Slip on, Lap Joint, and Blind.
The two most popular are Socket weld and Threaded Flanges, which are the ones that Global Valve and Controls provides on their valves.
“A flange is a method of connecting pipes, Valves, pumps and other equipment to form a piping system. It also provides easy access for cleaning, inspection or modification. Flanges are usually welded or screwed. Flanged joints are made by bolting together two flanges with a gasket between them to provide a seal.”
Life on a Rig
Ever wonder what life would be like if you lived on a Rig? When you first step on a rig, you will be handed your work boots, goggles, and working clothes. You will then be given a tour of the facility.
Depending on where you are located- some rooms have Television sets, and/or wireless internet that you can access. Some even have saunas, pools and gyms!
Offshore rigs operate 24 hours a day, so one week you might work the day shift and the next you might work the night. The schedule rotates to make it fair for everyone.
Wooden Pipeline
The title explains it all. In 1963 the raw materials were inside whiskey barrels and pulled by horses.
“Despite considerable ridicule, threats, armed attacks, arson and sabotage, the first wooden pipeline, about 9 miles in length, was built in 1865”
Today, oil pipelines are made out of steel or plastic tubes. They are more than 9 miles in length. The Trans Canada pipeline is approximately 2147 miles.
Modern pipelines can be used for:
- gather oil and gas over one mile beneath the ocean surface
- transport supercritical fluid carbon dioxide for territory oil recovery
- carry natural gas liquids for growing regional heating and olefins industries
- and transport specialty chemicals between chemical plants and refineries

Slow Season for Sales?
The holidays are upon us here at GVC and we are still striving to meet our goals to help you, the customer, meet yours. We are not running around the office with our heads cut off, (at-least not at the moment that is) The holidays are a slow time for us at Global Valve and Controls, but we look forward to kicking off 2012 and getting back to business as usual!
(One of our employees working diligently on research for the upcoming year!)

Butterfly Valves
“A Butterfly Valve is used to control the flow of material through a circular pipe or tube. They consist of a circular disc with its pivot axis at right angles to the direction material is flowing.”
Some of the applications that use butterfly valves are air, gas, steam and liquid. The body can be made up of different materials such as cast iron, ductile iron, aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel and exotic metals.
“Depending on the application, additional valve features that may need to be considered. Some of these features include: the manner in which the stem and disc are attached, the way the stem and disc assembly mount inside the valve body, undercutting of disc, type of material used in stem bushings and packing, and availability of a ring seal between the seat and valve body.”
