North Dakota is booming with oil
North Dakota is booming with oil. Many in the industry predict America will soon overtake Saudi Arabia and Russia in producing oil!
“In an America where 18m are out of work, the chance of finding any job – let alone a well-paid job – exerts an irresistible force that is drawing thousands to North Dakota in a 21st century re-enactment of the Gold Rush”
“To do that, however, the oil fields need more workers than the thinly populated state of North Dakota can possibly supply. Scores of people arrive every day looking for a new start, a second chance in lives wrecked by personal troubles and the recession”

Keystone oil sands
On November 10, the Obama administration said it would delay a decision on the Keystone oil sands pipeline expansion until 2013.
The pipeline has been opposed by environmental groups, citing risk of spills but also would also keep the United States into dependency on oil sands, a particularly dirty form of oil. Supporters believe however; that jobs created from the pipeline would help boost local economy and the US could use the 700k barrels per day the pipeline would generate.
While Obama did not cancel the pipeline, the delay means the pipeline can not create much needed jobs for workers.

10 REASONS WHY THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE WILL BE BUILT
“Obama can’t afford to oppose this commonsense measure.”
“Over the past two weeks or so, several hundred protesters assembled outside the White House to oppose the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline, which is designed to transport bitumen produced from oil sands in Alberta to refineries on the Gulf Coast.”
In my opinion, I do believe that Obama cannot afford to allow this pipeline project to continue because the United States are still dealing with Debt, why sink more money into a project that might damage the residents’ homes? Or what will happen to the atmosphere once this project starts?
“The Protesters are hoping that President Obama will block the $7 Billion Pipeline. Their rationale: The pipeline will result in Major increases in Carbon-dioxide emissions, and therefore it must be stopped or catastrophic climate change will ensure. Protest as they might, a State Department report found that the pipeline will not have a major environmental impact.”
Because the pipeline will not have major damage to the climate and will not have a major impact on the environment, they still feel that it is necessary to approve this theory? So they state that this Pipeline will help United States utilize the oil. How can they be so sure that this project will actually follow through and also be accurate with the map and assure the residents of locations where this pipeline will begin, go through what towns, at what stopping point will they reach, and also how long will this project be?
In the article – http://www.manhattan-institue.org/html/miarticle.htm?id=7437
“Here are ten reasons why the Keystone Pipeline will be built:
- Canada’s oil production is rising, Mexico’s is falling
- U.S. oil production is rising, but we will still need to import oil, and lots of it.
- Some of the oil moving through the Keystone XL will likely be exported, but that’s no reason to stop it.
- The pipeline will help America’s balance of trade. Refining is manufacturing.
- U.S. oil demand may be relatively flat, but it’s not going away.
- Like it or not, oil is here to stay.
- We should be getting as much oil as we can from as close to home as we can.
- The claims about the pipeline being the pivotal project with regard to carbon dioxide are not true.
- Demonize oil all you want, but coal is the real issue when it comes to carbon-dioxide emissions.
- Obama can’t afford to hand a major campaign issue to his Republican opponent.
The result: Carbon-dioxide emissions are soaring. The Kyoto agreement failed. Copenhagen failed. Cancun failed. The upcoming climate meeting to be held in Durban in December will fail, too. Why? The developing countries of the world need energy, and lots of it.”
We have been provided 10 reasons as to why this pipeline needs to be built and 5 reasons to why this pipeline should not be built. If every meeting the United States has and fails; the carbon-dioxide emissions are soaring, as well as many countries in the world need energy and we need oil; these should be some of the signals the President should be aware of and taken into action.
The Alaskan Pipeline: A Necessary Obstruction?
They say that the Alaskan Pipeline construction leads to many good and bad consequences, throughout the years the millions of barrels were to be available to be shipped to the US for consumption. But the positive outlook impacted could possibly be easily overshadowing the environmental harm, which could cause hundreds of miles worth of piping. “The question remains, is the pipeline worth approximately 8 billion dollars? Is the oil transported more valuable than the land that will be changed as a result of 800 miles of steel piping?” (In the article: http://sitemaker.umich.edu/section003_group001/home) The Trans-Alaskan Pipeline is well worth the environmental risks because the minimal damage it causes, and to the most realistic, convenient, and sustainable way to get the oil out of Northern Alaska is by developing the pipes to run though the towns it needs get it out of Northern Alaska.
What the Frack?!?!?
Fracking is a term used to describe when the human hand uses
a machine to inject the earth with millions of gallons of water along with sand
and other chemicals to break up the shale rock and release the natural gas. I
have read numerous of blogs online where different people swear this is
extremely harmful to the environment. I have also learned that because of
Fracking- gas production has tremendously increased.
“LONDON - A
controversial method of extracting gas from the ground known as fracking was
the "highly probable" trigger of earth tremors along England's
coastline this year, according to findings published Wednesday.”
What has now become of Chernobyl disaster
Many of you have heard what happened in Chernobyl- located North of Kiev, Ukraine and near the south border of Belarus. I was born in the year 1986- when it happened and always interested in the history of my country. (Russia).
Here is a script of what exactly happened from: www.world-nuclear.org/info/chernobyl/inf07.html
“The interaction of very hot fuel with the
cooling water led to fuel fragmentation along with rapid steam production and
an increase in pressure. The design characteristics of the reactor were such
that substantial damage to even three or four fuel assemblies can – and did – result in the destruction of the reactor. The
overpressure caused the 1000 t cover plate of the reactor to become partially
detached, rupturing the fuel channels and jamming all the control rods, which
by that time were only halfway down. Intense steam generation then spread
throughout the whole core (fed by water dumped into the core due to the rupture
of the emergency cooling circuit) causing a steam explosion and releasing
fission products to the atmosphere. About two to three seconds later, a second
explosion threw out fragments from the fuel channels and hot graphite. There is
some dispute among experts about the character of this second explosion, but it
is likely to have been caused by the production of hydrogen from
zirconium-steam reactions. The
graphite (about a quarter of the 1200 tones of it was estimated to have been
ejected) and fuel became incandescent and started a number of fires,
causing the main release of radioactivity into the environment.”
Here is also an interesting website that shows more pictures and a video of the aftermath of Chernobyl
Proposed ASTM Standard Facilitating Compliance with Greenhouse Gas Regulations
| The need for a consensus standard targeting the measurement of gaseous hydrocarbons and other components of gaseous streams allowing users to better comply with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s greenhouse gas regulation provided the impetus for the development of a proposed new ASTM International standard meeting this need.
ASTM WK33788, Test Method for Determination of Hydrocarbons and Nonhydrocarbon Gases in Gaseous Mixtures by Gas Chromatography, is under development by Subcommittee D03.07 on Analysis of Chemical Composition of Gaseous Fuels, part of ASTM International Committee D03 on Gaseous Fuels. According to Shannon Canfield, marketing chemist, Wasson-ECE Instrumentation, and chairman of D03.07, ASTM WK33788 is a merging and enhancement with updated technology of two ASTM standards, ASTM D1945, Test Method for Analysis of Natural Gas by Gas Chromatography, and ASTM D1946, Practice for Analysis of Reformed Gas by Gas Chromatography. “ASTM D1945 and ASTM D1946 will remain on the books as the natural gas industry uses them just as they are written,” says Canfield. However, Canfield notes that many users perform gaseous fuel hydrocarbon analyses using hardware and technology such as capillary columns and various detectors that are not included in D1945 and D1946. “In order to comply with what is being used in the industry and to provide regulators with a more comprehensive method to point to, we decided to develop ASTM WK33788,” says Canfield. The proposed new standard will cover the analysis of parts per million to percent level inert gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, argon, nitrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide along with low ppm level hydrocarbons such as methane, ethane and propane in various gaseous streams. The proposed new standard is intended to be performance based. The methodology described in the proposed standard enables separation of low molecular weight hydrocarbons and inert gases for a detailed analysis of the composition of gaseous streams. Refineries and chemical plants, along with contract laboratories and regulatory agencies, will be the primary users of ASTM WK33788. All parties interested in aiding the development of gaseous fuels standards are encouraged to join Committee D03. ASTM International welcomes and encourages participation in the development of its standards. For more information on becoming an ASTM member, visit www.astm.org/JOIN. Is Obama Dismantling the Trans-Alaska Pipeline?
The popular conservative website The Daily Caller ran with the sensational headline Thursday entitled "Pipe Down," followed with a photo of the Trans-Alaska pipeline snaking its way right toward the reader. The story led with the following paraphrase of U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, the feisty Republican who chairs the House Resource Committee:
"The Obama administration is setting the stage for the dismantling of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and poses the greatest threat to its existence today," so the lede goes.
The pipeline is indeed in danger of running dry. Once it carried more than two million barrels a day. Now its throughput is at about 600,000 barrels a day, and declining about 5 percent a year. If nothing is done to put more oil in the line, that amount is expected to be around 350,000 in 10 years.
Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., the consortium that runs the pipeline, doesn't yet know at what point the pipeline itself will have to shut. But with such low levels of oil running through it, water, ice and wax builds could result in extended shut-downs of the pipeline.
Needless to say, President Obama does not have the power -- neither legally nor politically -- to dismantle much at all these days, to say nothing of an 800-mile tube of steel running through some of Alaska's most inhospitable lands.
But Obama does have some say over oil and gas development on federal lands, and federal waters, oil that would eventually run down the TAPS.
And in this matter, the article says, the president has been more on the side of "'far-left environmentalists' than in preserving a pipeline that carries approximately 10 percent of the nation's daily oil output..."
Surprised? Some are, especially the coalition of environmentalists who have been fighting offshore oil and gas development in Arctic Alaska.
"Anyone who claims that the Obama administration is on the same page as environmental groups is reality-impaired," said Brendan Cummings, senior counsel for the Center for Biological Diversity, the environmental group that's been on the forefront of fighting Arctic oil and gas developments.
"The Obama administration," Cummings continued, "is largely indistinguishable from the Bush administration," on policies related to offshore and onshore federal lands in Alaska.
